The Formby Befriending Scheme is always ready to welcome new volunteers. Volunteers are needed for the different roles we have, these are befrienders, coffee club volunteers and volunteer drivers.  A brief description of each role is explained here:

Befrienders

Befrienders visit an older person in their home or place of residence for at least one hour each week. Many choose to take their Friend out when possible, such as to our Coffee Club, or help signpost them to local services that may reduce isolation or support their health and wellbeing. We match volunteers and clients based on common interests and outlook to help the friendship grow naturally.

Coffee Club volunteers

We’re always looking for friendly volunteers to help with the smooth running of our twice-a-month Coffee Club, held on the first and third Tuesday of every month at the Circle Room, Formby Methodist Church on Elbow Lane. Tasks include setting up the room, making drinks, preparing snacks and chatting to those who come along. The first Tuesday Coffee Club is open to all older people in the community and both are also a great opportunity for Befrienders to bring their Friends out for an enjoyable afternoon.

Volunteer drivers

Volunteer drivers help older people travel to events such as the Coffee Club. Drivers use their own vehicles, and we check and agree availability and collection details in advance. This support makes a big difference to people who would otherwise struggle to attend social activities.

What we ask of our volunteers

All volunteers need two references, an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS), and completion of our mandatory training, including safeguarding. Training is provided regularly throughout the year. We also hold volunteer forums, along with an annual social event to say thank you for everything you do.
